As we all know, student senate elections are upon us as application deadlines round the corner on May 4th. Leon Salas, Butte College student and General Education Senator is running for President in the 2026 election. Leon is running because he wants to give students a voice, he says, “I want to meet other students where they are, understand where they are coming from, and help them achieve their goals.”
In his life as a student, Leon has done many things to improve campus lifestyle, by leading events such as “Wild for Wildlife”. This event focuses on the importance of Butte College campus and how it is a protected wildlife refuge. The event features animals that can be found on campus such as raccoons, screech owls, snapping turtles, or even the capybara.
Leon wants to be an advocate for improvement. He wants to create a well rounded team, that represents every group of people. He stands firm in his belief that students should feel they have a place that they feel confident and comfortable.
As the delegate vote on the state level for the regional board, and a statistics tutor, Leon has displayed his leadership skills in many ways already. If elected President of the Student Senate, Leon promises to be an active listener and make improvements when necessary. As a student, you should want someone in office who is an active listener, and Leon is just that!
Even if he weren’t elected into office, Leon would still choose to be very much involved in all that goes on with the students and student life on campus. He wishes to be a support system for the senate and students alike, making schools not only a place to learn but a place to grow and change together.
