As we enter a new semester, many of us are brought into a new environment with new students and new subjects alike. While this is an exciting time, this can also be a very stressful time for many students as well. Learning how to navigate your resources and manage time effectively plays a huge role in your success as a college student.
A good use of your time and resources would be to check out our counseling center here on campus. I’m sure many of us at one time or another have been in an academic situation where we had no idea where to even begin, or what the first step might be.
The good news is, there are people to help.
Contacting our counseling center whether it be through stopping by in person, or by phone call is a fast and easy process. If you choose to try and contact a counselor through the phone expect to be on hold for a short period before one of the representative answers the phone in order to assist you with whatever needs you would like met.
Making sure to have your student id number is a crucial step for the counselors to get you on the right path. Once they have access to your student account they are able to look over your class history in order to see what subjects you have experience with and others that you do not to successfully craft a semester plan perfect for your personal educational needs.
By the time that you are meeting with your counselor in person, your plan should be all set up as they help walk you through which classes fall under which categories, so you are able to knock them off your list.
If you are like the many others out there your general education classes may be the hardest to choose from as you might now know what could peak at least some interest to you, and what subjects you will dread or struggle with.
With the help of a counselor they are able to point you in a direction based on what past students may have enjoyed and answer any questions of yours regarding concerns of difficulty in certain classes.
The meetings for a semester plan range anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour based on what you might want to discuss while in the appointment. These topics can range from long term transfer goals to a larger institution in the future, to discussions regarding your major of choice and the possibility to change it.
College student, Oci McConnell, a first year student majoring in film studies, was more than eager to sit down and share her experience with The Roadrunner, “I made an appointment to discuss my semester planning to eventually transfer to a 4-year university.”
When asked if all her questions were answered in the meeting she had this to say, “I felt like my questions were answered, but when I left the room, a million new questions popped into my head, so I’ll definitely be scheduling another appointment!”
Another first year student, Nyasia Griffin, agreed, “The appointment was fast, felt attentive, and made me feel more comfortable about my schedule.”
If you have fears that you won’t get what you want from your meeting or that you will leave feeling even more confused than before there is no need to worry, these counselors care about you and hear your voice!
So maybe, as you walk along campus today pop by the counseling office and schedule an appointment to discuss whatever academic needs you would like and feel more confident in your college career here at Butte.
