The job fair was hosted at the Butte College main campus inside the newly built Nest Center in the Student Center building, on Tuesday, September 17, 2024. This was a great opportunity for students who either are sure of what they want to do after graduation or for those who are still unsure or uncommitted to a career choice after college.
Those who participated in the event were from all over the Butte County such as the Butte County Public Health, Chico, Paradise, Oroville, and Red Bluff police departments, Butte Sheriff’s Office, District Attorney’s office for Butte County, and Cal-Fire to name a few.
The fair provided information and an opportunity to gain contacts or network, and see other things that may pique your interest in a job or career. Students often don’t realize that there are many available jobs, including some outside the traditional 9-5 office gigs. Events like these are a great way to see what is available and what requirements are needed for these jobs.
Many students, unfortunately, didn’t even realize that a job fair was happening, and some who the Roadrunner talked to said they didn’t attend the event because they already had jobs.
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) was one booth at the event, and patrolmen Frank Valdepena who has attended this event before and served with the CHP for 18 years said, “Student engagement is always good, as is the brunch and it’s always great to be talking with the Students at Butte College.”
Cal-Fire had students try on firefighter gear to show how it feels and what it takes to be a firefighter.
Vincent, a student in the Fire Academy at Butte College, highly recommends the event, “Being a firefighter is the best job in the world. Every time I ask a firefighter what they think of the job they always say they love it, and when I ask other people what they think of their jobs just say it’s something to get paid.”
According to some booth workers, they saw over 150 students engage with the event.
“The public health booth was the best. They had the best message and for fobs, they didn’t require experience,” said Zoey and Claire, other students attending the event.
Several upcoming job fairs are planned academic and career and tech departments, so if you missed this event, don’t fret– there is another opportunity in October.
