On January 26, Democrat Anamarie Farias introduced Assembly Bill 1627, which would disqualify anyone employed by the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement between September 1, 2025, and January 20, 2029, from police and education jobs.
This bill was introduced only days after the shooting of Alex Pretti in Minnesota by ICE, which has caused uproar across the United States about the violent and dangerous tactics being used by federal agents.
Farias shared this sentiment in an emailed statement to the Sacramento Bee: “Public service requires integrity, restraint, and respect for due process. When those values are abandoned, public trust is broken, and communities are put at risk.”
Assembly Bill 1627 still must pass through legislative committees and both chambers of the California Legislature before it can be signed into law by Governor Gavin Newsom.
