Four Lakota men found themselves the detainees of the immigration customs enforcement earlier this month.
Leaders of the Oglala Sioux Tribe say they were first made aware of the detainment of four of its enrolled members on Jan, 8, 2026. Since news broke on the event earlier this week one member has been released from custody however the others were reported to have been moved to Fort Snelling.
Frank Star Comes Out, the tribal president of the Oglala Sioux has this to say about the incident.
“The irony is not lost upon us. Lakota citizens are now reported to be held at Fort Snelling, a site forever tied to the Dakota 38+2 underscores why treaty obligations and federal accountability matter today not just in history.”
Star further stated that he and other leaders viewed the unlawful detainment of Oglala Sioux members as a direct violation of treaties signed into place by the tribe and federal government.
Currently Star is demanding the immediate confirmation of the identities, locations, and legal status of all detained tribal members. The immediate release of all tribal detainees being held in custody by ICE, as well as a written assurance that all such unlawful detentions against tribal members will cease.
In response the department said said it could not verify these claims put forth by the tribe, further stating they have not yet uncovered any claims from detainees being held who claim to be of Oglala Sioux decent.
This is an ongoing story and the team over here at The Roadrunner will be working hard to bring our readers the further developments on this case.
