As the sun sets sooner and the semester comes to an end, students tend to fall a little behind as it becomes overwhelming and the mood shifts a little. You find yourself in this phase of What do I do now? It gets dark so early that it feels like the day disappeared before you even had a chance to live it. During times like this, it may seem like there’s nothing to look forward to, but there is still hope. Try again. Get up and do something for yourself, even if it’s small. Physical exercise, connecting with other people, practicing good affirmations, picking up a hobby, eating a little better, and trying to improve your sleep — these things really can help, even if you doubt it. You may think, “How will these help?” Go out and try them. Do something that makes you feel good.
Oftentimes when you feel the least motivated, all you want to do is stay in bed, and that isn’t always a bad thing. Sometimes you need that break after being so busy and not having any time for yourself. When your thoughts get overwhelming, breathe. Remind yourself that your thoughts are not facts.
Sometimes healing begins with the smallest wins, the ones no one else sees but you. Getting out of bed, opening the blinds, drinking a glass of water, going to school, or going for a walk for just a few minutes are things worth celebrating. And as life slows down and the days grow shorter, remember that these slow seasons aren’t empty — they’re where growth quietly happens. You don’t have to carry everything alone, either. Reaching out for help, whether to a loved one, a friend, or a professional, is a sign of strength, not weakness. You deserve support. Butte College also offers counseling. You can make an appointment at the SAS (Student Administrative Services) building, Room 110.
Allow yourself to feel whatever comes up without judging yourself. Your emotions don’t make you weak — they make you human. And even in the hardest moments, there are still small pockets of joy waiting for you: your favorite song, a warm drink, a peaceful morning, a good laugh. Let yourself notice them.
Healing isn’t easy. Some days will feel lighter, some heavier, but none of those days erase how far you’ve come. There is a way out of this. There is a light at the end of the tunnel, even if you can’t see it yet. You matter. You are enough. You are doing enough. Wake up and go to sleep with affirmations like “I am safe,” “I am enough,” “I can get through this,” or “I can finish school.” Telling yourself you can and you will go a long way.
