Twas’ the Night Before Finals

A spin on the classic holiday poem with a Roadrunner twist
Festive Butte College Roadrunner, Chico, CA, November 22, 2025 (Bridget Barry)

‘Twas the night before finals, and our break was so near

Every student was stirring, it had been quite a year

The teachers provided exams with much care

In hopes that their students would pass fair and square

The pupils were nestled all snug in their beds

While visions of A-pluses danced in their heads

The pens all in place and my notes tucked away

I called it a night after the long study day

Then suddenly outside came a loud, startling shatter

I jumped from my blankets with my hair in a scatter

I leapt to the window with not one pause

Threw open the drapes to see what the cause

When, what to my drowsy eyes should appear

But the Butte College roadrunner, spreading good fortune and cheer

It whooshed through the yard with lightning-speed pace

Leaving Roadrunner feathers all over the place

More rapid than deadlines his motivation it came

And it squawked and chirped, with inspiration to claim

The ear of every student in town heard the Roadrunners call

“Attention all students, I have words of encouragement for y’all!”

He perched on the lamppost, so lively and bright

It shouted, “Stay strong! Your success is insight!

Now Focus! Now confidence! Fear not, for your hard work will show

Your knowledge will sparkle, your self-assurance will grow!

You’ve studied, you’ve practiced, you’ve given your all,

So, trust in yourselves as you answer the test’s call.”

To the top of your goals, let determination enthrall

Now dash away, dash away, dash away all!”

Then flapping its wings with a proud little stride,

He circled the neighborhood with scholarly pride

He tapped on each window, he pecked on each door,

Leaving courage, calmness, and tranquility galore

The students that heard it felt suddenly light,

Their worries now lifted, their chests feeling no longer tight

He zoomed through the treetops, them swooped down below

Painting hope in the sky like a fresh tracks in the snow

And I heard him exclaim, as he dashed out of view,

“You’ve got this Butte students, stay true!

Be steady, be focused, believe in your might

And may all of your finals turn out just right!”
