Just two miles past Gridley on Highway 99 lies one of the most underappreciated restaurants in Butte County. Los Parientes is a small, family-owned business that opened its doors a little less than four months ago. The lack of foot traffic has been concerning, so a friend and I decided to stop by and give it an honest review.

From the moment we walked in, we were greeted with smiles and waves from the staff, plus laughter and a playful hello from our waitress’s child. We were told to sit wherever we liked, setting the tone for the relaxed, family-style atmosphere.
Mariachi music played softly in the background as sunlight reflected off the mellow yellow walls. The smell of hot cooking oil and fresh salsa filled the air as we grabbed a table near the kitchen.
They say, “When in Rome, do as the Romans do.” So naturally, I started with the house special — the Michelada. Our server, Lidia, brought out a frothing 32-ounce mug of beer, rimmed with beautifully charred shrimp and ridge-cut cucumbers.
Leo and I quickly came to realize that the only thing better than the at-home vibe was the food that we were presented . The carnitas were incredible — rich, tender, and perfectly crispy around the edges. The chicken pambazo that Leo ordered was packed with flavor, so much so that we ordered another one to take on the road.
In the words of my good friend Leo who also happens to be a first generation Mexican American immigrant, “Usually when I want good Mexican food I just go to my mom’s but I have to be honest here, this food is as close to home that I’ve ever been.”
Next time you and your friends are looking for a new spot to try, swing by Los Parientes. Enjoy the food, chat with the staff, and don’t forget to ring the bell on your way out!
