On November 4, 2024, Butte College announced, via a press release, the appointment of Imelda Simos-Valdez as the school’s new vice president of student services.
Simos-Valdez steps into the role with over 30 years of experience in higher education and with a goal of bringing a strong focus on student-centered leadership to Butte College. Simos-Valdez emphasizes her commitment to supporting students by saying, “I’m incredibly excited to assume the role of vice president for student services at Butte College because it presents an opportunity to impact student success and equity at a pivotal time in their educational journeys.”
Before joining Butte College, Simos-Valdez served as executive director of categorical programs at Bakersfield College.
Beyond her notable work experience, Simos-Valdez’s academic credentials also stand out as she has a master’s degree in educational administration from California State University, Bakersfield.
Now at Butte, Simos-Valdez aims to create an inclusive and empowering atmosphere. She noted that she wanted to create a place where students can achieve their goals.
When talking about why she picked Butte College, Simos-Valdez explained, “I was drawn to Butte College because of its strong commitment to student success, equity, and community engagement.” She also stated that the college’s reputation for having a supportive environment struck a chord with her, as that is something she values as an educational leader.
Butte College’s president, Virginia L. Guleff, expressed great confidence about the appointment of Imelda. Guleff highlighted Simos-Valdez’s track record of advancing equity and impactful student services.
