On June 1st, the world will be tuning in to watch the UEFA Champions League final.

This year’s curtain closer for the biggest tournament in club football won’t just be about crowning the best team in Europe, but it’ll also mark the farewell of two football icons, Toni Kroos and Marco Reus.

The final, which will be played at the historic Wembley Stadium, will represent the conclusion of two contrasting football journeys.

Toni Kroos, who has won every possible accolade, including five Champions League titles—four of which he won with Real Madrid—has had a career defined by consistent excellence and professional success.

For Kroos, this final is an opportunity to cap off his illustrious club career with yet another Champions League victory.

Beyond the Champions League final, Kroos will also be present at this year’s Euro, where he will represent Germany in his last ever tournament before fully hanging up his boots.

Kroos joined Real Madrid in 2014 and has since been integral to one of the most successful dynasties in European football history.

With 463 appearances for Los Blancos, he has won a staggering 22 titles, including four Champions League trophies, five Club World Cups, and four La Liga titles.

His precise passing, vision, and control have cemented him as one of the best midfielders of his generation.

Marco Reus, on the other hand, has had a career filled with near-misses and injuries.

Different from Kroos,  Marco has not yet announced his retirement but instead, his farewell will be from Borussia,  for which he has played for since 2012.

Despite lacking a major trophy, he is without a doubt one of Dortmund’s most beloved figures.

His immense talent often seemed insufficient to reach the highest glories, having come close on many occasions, including a loss in a Champions League final to rivals Bayern Munich.

Reus has been with Borussia Dortmund since 2012, making 428 appearances, scoring 170 goals, and providing 131 assists.

Known for his resilience, Reus has battled many injuries throughout his career. Despite this, he remains a symbol of loyalty and passion for Dortmund fans. Winning the Champions League would be the perfect end to Reus’ journey at Dortmund.

The simultaneous farewell of Reus and Kroos adds a unique narrative to the final.

Their departures elevate the match beyond a typical Champions League final, infusing it with deep emotional and historical significance. Fans of both clubs, and even neutral supporters, will be deeply invested in witnessing the culmination of these two remarkable careers.

The 2024 Champions League final will be more than just a celebration of football; it will be a celebration of its heroes and the legacies they leave behind.
