English 2: College Reading and Composition

The Composition of Knowledge: community, practice and value

Welcome. As a course in composition, we explore the ways in which knowledge is negotiated to serve and reflect ideological, rhetorical and discipline-specific needs. We start with the assumption that language cannot be separated from social, cultural and historical contexts. This assumption influences how we write and how we read.

We will examine a variety of texts to examine the strategies used to create persuasive, analytic, and public writings and will investigate how academic discourse communities produce, distribute, and privilege certain types of constructed meaning through rules, expectations, and  structures that are used to dis/empower individuals.

Because most information is now distributed digitally, primarily through the internet, and especially social media, we must investigate the evolving landscape of digital writing and media. We will critically examine the role of digital platforms in information dissemination, understand the ethics of digital citizenship, analyze digital media, and delve into multimedia texts in order to engage responsibly in the digital world.

I’m excited to work with you!
