Studying in the United States is still a dream for many students around the globe, and many people admire it for good reasons. The question is: why is studying in the United States such a big dream for many? For decades, people worldwide have been impressed by the United States’ education system, living standards, and unlimited opportunities. For many, however, it is the safety and security the country offers. Students choose to study in the U.S. for many reasons, but most importantly because it is seen as a land full of opportunities & chances for anyone, regardless of their skin color, race, or background.
While the dream of studying in the United States can be very inspiring, the reality of being an international student comes with many challenges and difficulties because you are trying to adapt to a completely different world from what you call home. From the moment students step inside the United States, they face many challenges such as cultural differences, homesickness, and, mostly, language barriers. Many American students don’t realize how hard the process can be to come and study here, from getting accepted to a university to, most of all, getting your visa issued and leaving behind everything you once had to start a very new life in an unfamiliar country. From my experience, I always thought my process to get here—the endless paperwork and interviews—was the hardest part, but once I stepped into the United States, I realized the real challenge had just begun.
The biggest challenges international students have to go through are academic pressure, financial struggles, language barriers, and emotional isolation. The way of learning and teaching in the United States can be very different from other countries. In the U.S., students have to do most of their work on their own; it is like self-study. Most of the work is done independently, and students who are new to conducting research and managing the heavy workload given by schools often feel the pressure to succeed.
While studying in the U.S. can be exciting, the struggle with finances can be bittersweet. Tuition fees are significantly higher for international students compared to local students. Along with the cost of living and personal expenses, the financial pressure can be immense. However, one positive aspect is that it teaches students money management skills early in life, which can help them become financially disciplined and, most of all, independent.
Language barriers can make life tough for international students. Even after knowing English, understanding accents and slang can be stressful when trying to keep up in conversations. This often leads students to hesitate to speak or participate, resulting in embarrassment and self-consciousness. Emotional isolation adds to the struggle, as being far from family and trying to adjust to a new culture can make students feel lonely.
Despite these struggles, studying in the U.S. comes with meaningful and amazing rewards. International students don’t just earn a degree—they gain lifelong experiences that help shape their future. They learn to live independently, navigate challenges, and take care of themselves, growing in strength and resilience through this transformative process. They also build friendships with people from all over the globe, forming lifelong connections, and the skills they develop create a pathway to success.
An Inspiring Example: Manmeet Kaur’s Journey
Take Manmeet Kaur, a former student from Burma who started her journey at Butte College in the fall of 2017. Her experience as an international student highlights both the challenges and the rewards of studying in the United States.
“I started Butte College in the fall of 2017 as an international student. My experience at Butte College was one of the best times of my life. Being an international student, I was facing a lot of difficulties getting situated, but everyone at Butte College helped me and guided me as I spent those years getting my education,” she shared.
Manmeet also talks about the support she received: “The staff and faculty members and all the friends I made at Butte will always be so special to me. I also had the privilege of working with so many amazing staff members at the Center for Academic Success and the International Office.”
During her time at Butte College, she had the chance to meet people from all over the world and embrace cultural diversity. “I got to meet people from all over the world and learn about their cultures and customs and the differences/similarities we all share with each other despite being from different parts of the world,” she explained.
Like many international students, she faced challenges staying away from home. “However, the warm community at Butte College made all the difference. “The hardest thing I faced as an international student was being away from family, but everyone at the school was so welcoming that I felt like I had a second family at Butte College.”
Her story is an example of how support, community, and determination can turn a challenge into an unforgettable journey “I will always cherish my time at Butte College & as an international student,” she said.
The journey is never going to be easy, but the opportunities, memories, and personal growth you gain make it all worth it. For many, studying in the U.S. isn’t just about education—it is so much more than that. It is about becoming the best version of yourself that you can ever be.
