For many Butte students, Greek life can seem like a private club, reserved only for those at Chico State. It’s a world that often seems just out of reach for Roadrunners. But at Alpha Chi, that’s not the case. In fact, Alpha Chi currently stands as the only sorority in Chico that accepts Butte students, offering them the unique chance to join a sisterhood that’s both welcoming and inclusive.
For background context, Alpha Chi is Chico’s oldest sorority, established way back in 1918 by a group of high school girls.
The sorority’s core values are Love, Loyalty, Justice, and Leadership, and beyond just social events, Alpha Chi also does a lot of social activities.
Their main efforts are usually put into supporting the Butte Humane Society. Their support includes participating in the annual coin drive, Woofstock, and volunteering with animals.
Alpha Chi also takes part in other community activities ranging from blood drives to fun runs.
The sorority also hosts a plethora of events, ranging from retreats to dinner nights. These events are seen as a chance for sorority members to dress up, create bonds, and above all, to have fun.
A crucial aspect of Alpha Chi, as with any other sorority, is rush, since it’s their primary way of getting new members.
Alpha Chi’s rush events are organized in such a way to allow prospective members to get to know Alpha Chi and its members and potentially form lifelong connections.
At the rush events, food and materials are provided at no cost to attendees.
Here is a list of the scheduled rush events for Alpha Chi:
- Info Day (9/5): Meet the board and rush counselors, learn who Alpha Chi is, what they do, and the rush process.
- House Tours (9/7): Explore the Alpha Chi house, see the rooms, check out the trophy case, and learn where events are held.
- Casino Night (9/10): A fun night to practice your gambling skills with Alpha Chi sisters.
- BBQ (9/11): Enjoy food, fun, and learn more about each other at the final rush event.
When talking about her own experience joining Alpha Chi, Vice President Phaedra Phillis said, “I never thought I would be part of a sorority… but I remember one of my first days at Butte having two girls ask me if I ever wanted to be in Greek life. I had never thought about it, but I wanted to meet new people and possibly make new friends—and if you couldn’t tell, I loved it.”
Phaedra’s story might be very similar to your own—new at the school and wanting to make new friends and live fun experiences—and if that’s the case, then Alpha Chi might just be for you.
She went on to talk about what she found at Alpha Chi, saying, “I met some of the most inspirational and awesome women I think I ever will meet. They have supported me through school, sorority, and life as a whole.”
Phaedra also talked about how much Alpha Chi means to her, explaining, “Alpha Chi will always be something I hold in my heart, and I know my sisters will have my back forever.”
This powerful quote from the sorority’s Vice President does a good job showing just how meaningful being part of Alpha Chi can be to its members and just how long-lasting the bonds formed within the sorority can be.
Beyond Phaedra, the Roadrunner also got the unique chance to talk to sorority President Brooklyn Dooley who, as she explained, also joined the sorority in hopes of making friends but ended up making much more than just that.
She said, “As a transfer student from out of state, I never thought I would get the chance to partake in Greek life. It wasn’t until one day I was approached by one of our fellow sisters that I actually put thought into it. I knew that I wanted to make friends, and that is exactly what I did.”
She went on to expand upon how important Alpha Chi is to her and how strong the bonds made with the sorority are, saying, “Not only has Alpha Chi given me some of my best friends throughout college, but it has also given me the girls that will be in my wedding someday and lifelong friendships.”
Both Phaedra and Brooklyn spoke very passionately about the supportive community and lifelong friends formed within Alpha Chi.
Their testimonials illustrate just how joining Alpha Chi can provide students with a strong support system and a sisterhood that will last a lifetime.
So if you are interested in being a part of Alpha Chi, just know that the doors are open and the fence is low.
For more details about getting involved with Alpha Chi, representatives from the sorority will be at the main campus until August 30, in front of the library under the solar panels, and on September 2 and 3 at a location that hasn’t been decided yet.
