Roomies

A poem

Written by Justin Stock

They each sit in their own rooms,

safe on their islands they choose not to wave

she cooks when he is in bed,

he cleans when she is at work

the walls are thin but each of them laughs too loud

each wanting to be heard in passing

“We were friends once” he confesses

“We were friends once?” She wonders

she waits by the door until she hears him leave

he waits in his car when he sees the lights on

now a ghost to each that haunts the other

a mirage that flickers in and out of existence and memory.

Roomies til the spring

then strangers forever there after.
