The 49ers lost a low-scoring game rain-game to the Los Angeles Rams at home in Levi’s Stadium.
The story of the matchup was the 49ers’ inability to find rhythm on offense and score in the red zone.
However, this wasn’t a game decided by the woes and miscues of the team. The defense performed exceptionally well despite the offense’s struggles
The 49ers defensive unit played well, they limited penalties, and their secondary was able to nullify the Ram’s passing attack except for one deep shot to Puca Nacua in the second half.
The 49ers offense was flat-out horrible. Deebo Samuel and Brock Purdy were primarily to blame for this poor offensive performance.
On a critical 3rd and 10 in the third quarter, Deebo Samuel dropped a pass on a slant route over the middle that probably would’ve been a touchdown. This would’ve put the 49ers ahead by a touchdown going into the fourth quarter.
After last week’s win over the Bears, Samuel took to X to complain about not getting the ball enough stating, “Not struggling just not getting the ball!!!!!!!”
Well, this week he “got the ball” In fact, the ball was thrown to him seven times. So, it appears that he might be struggling.
That said, Brock Purdy might be the ultimate reason why the 49ers lost this game.
As the 49ers were driving toward the red zone nearing the end of the fourth quarter, Brock Purdy threw an interception on a deep ball to Jauan Jennings.
This interception put the nail into the coffin for the 49ers. An excellent drive was ruined by an untimely turnover.
The Rams went on to score the game-winning field goal with ease as time expired.
When asked about his team’s performance in the post-game press conference, Head Coach Kyle Shanahan said “I’m pretty disappointed with how we played tonight. Especially offensively … I thought we were ready to play, but we just didn’t play well enough on offense.”
At this point, it’s fair to say that the season is over for the Niners. They’re 6-8 and are 1-4 in divisional games which means any chance they have of winning the tight NFC West is probably gone barring a miraculous losing streak from the rest of the teams in the division.
