On December 6, Sabrina Carpenter’s brand-new holiday variety music special, A Nonsense Christmas with Sabrina Carpenter, premiered on the Netflix streaming service for subscribers to watch. It features duets with several artists, such as Chappell Roan and Shania Twain, along with entertaining skits spliced throughout the show.
This year has been quite remarkable for Carpenter, as she recently exploded into popularity with the release of her sixth studio album, Short n’ Sweet, released in August 2024. And following the conclusion of the North American section of the similarly titled tour, fans will not be left hanging this holiday season.
Partnering with Netflix, A Nonsense Christmas with Sabrina Carpenter features numerous tracks from her 2023 Christmas-themed EP, fruitcake, duet covers of popular holiday songs, and comedy sketches in between the musical acts. Carpenter went all out with the production value of her special, bringing out a unique stage for every song, accompanied by a new, eye-catching outfit. With her angelic voice, each performance becomes a magnificent listening experience.
Going with her current brand, she’s seen throughout the show making silly jokes and innuendos. Carpenter’s dialogue makes it feel like you’re hanging out with some close friends during the comedy sketches. In my opinion, one of the standout comedy sections is where Sabrina is revealed to be dating the real Santa Claus, unbeknownst to her. The second is about the spirits of three women who confront their lover after being ghosted out of a potential relationship with him.
And of course, we can’t forget about the duet covers of those holiday classics. Chappell Roan appeared on-stage alongside Carpenter and brought out a passionate rendition of “Last Christmas” set in a moody living room set. Shania Twain dropped by as Ms. Claus during one of the sketches, then later went on to sing “Santa Baby” in a white, sparkly, and elegant dress.
All in all, Sabrina Carpenter’s first Netflix special is quite a fun and enjoyable show, especially with her musical performances, duet covers with other pop stars, and the silly comedy sketches. I think everyone should give it a watch, if you’re looking for something to set you right into the holiday spirit.
