The 49ers’ playoff hopes are quickly dwindling, and it’s going to take a monumental turnaround for them to make the playoffs.
Coming off a devastating 35-10 loss to Buffalo, the Niners have an 8.5% chance to make the playoffs, per ESPN.
Players who were instrumental to last year’s Super Bowl run like Christian McCaffrey, Brandon Aiyuk, and Javon Hargrave are out for the season and likely out for the playoffs.
Additionally, Nick Bosa and Trent Williams have been dealing with injuries of their own and are questionable to return for the upcoming five games.
Injuries to important players have held the Niners back from building momentum and winning games convincingly. Fortunately, the next five games are the Niners’ easiest stretch of the schedule since the beginning of the season.
They play the 4-8 Bears on Sunday, then it’s the Rams, Dolphins, Lions, and the Cardinals to finish out the season.
The Lions are the only upcoming team the 49ers will face with a record greater than .500.
To make the playoffs, the 49ers would need to win practically all of these games, which could be quite a difficult task for a team that has struggled to string together even back-to-back wins this season. Without a win to the Bears on Sunday the 49ers’ playoff hopes likely go down the drain.
To win any of these upcoming games the 49ers will need Trent Williams blocking Brock Purdy’s blindside and Nick Bosa back on the defensive line.
There is absolutely hope for the 49ers to make the playoffs, but it all depends on the health of the team moving forward.
