Der Riese (The Giant) is the final map for Call Of Duty: World At War.
Many new features were added to this map and would become basics in almost every future zombies map. The Pack-A-Punch machine is the biggest thing added; it costs 5000 points and significantly upgrades the player’s weapon by doing more damage, having more ammo, and increasing the fire rate. To get Pack-A-Punch unlocked, there are three teleporters around the map (teleporters would go on to appear in multiple future maps) that need to be activates, and you get a 30-second timer to run back to the spawn area to interact with the pad. Once all three are active, the door-blocking Pack-A-Punch will open.
Map description: “The giant is rising. Face the might of the Nazi Zombies in their heartland. This is where it all began. This is where the master plan took shape. Is this where it all ends?”
A new throwable was added, called the “monkey bomb.” You throw it, and the zombies will be attracted to it until it explodes, killing them. There is also a new power-up called “Carpenter.” It boards up all windows around the map and gives the player 200 points. Another classic song first appears in Der Riese as the music Easter egg. It is simple to activate: three green jars around the map must be interacted with. The song is “Beauty of Annihilation” by Kevin Sherwood and Elena Siegman.
Der Riese starts the official zombie storyline by leaving radios around the map to get info about the creation of the zombies. There is no main easter egg yet, but it is getting there. The Wunderwaffle being on this map is fun because it is the first time you get to Pack-A-Punch it, making the wonder weapon even stronger than it is. There is a catwalk platform by one of the teleporters, and it is a good camping spot, especially if you have the Ray Gun or Wunderwaffle Pack-A-Punched.
Overall, Der Riese is also an 8/10 for me, the same as Shi No Numa. We are finally moving on to Call Of Duty: Black Ops Zombies; the next map is Kino Der Toten.
NOTE: All pictures will be from BO3 due to the older systems not having a screenshot option.
