The 2024 Butte Film Festival is approaching, and with that, we announce multiple changes in the festival’s programming that have been made.
As per multiple reports here on The Roadrunner, the event was initially scheduled to be held from November 22 through November 24 at Chico’s very own Laxson Auditorium.
However, as of August 12, all of that has changed.
In a press release sent out by the event’s organizers, it was announced that the festival has an entirely new date and venue.
Instead of happening in late November, the festival will take place from Friday, December 6, to Sunday, December 8, and instead of Laxson Auditorium, the event will be held at Oroville’s historic State Theatre.
While these changes greatly deviate from the festival’s previously planned dates and venue, they do, however, mean filmmakers will get more time to work on and submit films.
For those wanting to submit a film to the festival, the submissions will be divided into three deadlines—an early deadline, a regular deadline, and a final deadline.
The early deadline will be on September 15, the regular deadline on October 5, and for those unable to meet either, there will be a final deadline on October 25.
Submissions are open to all student filmmakers in Northern California, and every submitted film will be reviewed by the submission committee, with the selected films announced at a future date.
Submitted films shouldn’t run longer than 20 minutes, and according to a press release sent on August 12, they will be accepting films of all genres including, but not limited to: fiction (action, horror, comedy, rom-com), animation, documentary, music video, and experimental.
Another important detail for those planning on submitting films is that cash prizes will be awarded to the winners of each category. However, the exact amounts are still unknown and will be announced at a later date.
A significant change between last year’s BUFF and this year’s is the structure of the organization. Last year’s festival was put together and organized by Butte College’s very own Butte Film Club.
However, in hopes of being able to scale this year’s event to a much greater extent, the 2024 Butte Film Festival is being organized and hosted by the newly formed Butte Film Institute (BFI).
In a press release, the BFI stated that they plan on making “this year’s festival Northern California’s largest student film festival,” and with these great aspirations from the organizers, one can only expect a very memorable weekend.
If everything goes to plan, a memorable weekend is exactly what we will get.
