“Which Witch”-Florence and The Machine

Despite complicated lyrics, the song is easy to enjoy.

“Which Witch” is a song that tells the story about a witch in The Salem Witch Trials who is in love with someone but then an accident occurs causing the witch’s lover to die. She is then accused of causing the accident, referenced by the song with the lyrics, “who’s the heretic now?”

According to Lyric Genuis, the singer of the band, Florence Welsh, didn’t base the song off a true story, but an imagined  has about the song isn’t based on a true story, but it’s what she thought of when making the song. Florence Welsh also said in an interview that “I always felt that it should take place in Hollywood because Hollywood is an apocalyptic place.”

Ultimately this song is trying to convey the message that not everything is always the way it seems. For example, when Hollywood is portrayed in various movies and shows it is portrayed as this great place but really Hollywood isn’t all sunshine and rainbows.

Outside of the message, the song has a wonderful beat to it and despite the lyrics being complex, they are still easy to understand. Despite this song being a rock song, the background music isn’t loud or overbearing which tends to be the reason why some people shy away from listening to rock. The song offers a smooth listening experience, while not being totally calm.
